8 ways a Solo Traveler can have a Soulful Trip

Now more than ever, Solo Travel is a trend that I believe won't ever go away. The reasons could be not wanting to wait on anyone else, friends don't have the budget to take time off, they're not interested in where you want to go or you just want to explore by yourself.  I've taken a couple of trips by myself to write a book and another to surf.  Writing takes a lot of quiet time and when inspiration hits, I just didn't want to be obligated to hang out on anyone else's time schedule. I had a wonderful time.

I've met a lot of ladies in all age groups taking trips by themselves and we just ended up hanging out. Also, it's no pressure when you want to do things the other don't have interest in. You came solo so there's no expectations with who's choices of interest go first or last. It's like see you later or nice meeting you. On to the next adventure, if you know how to plan. The first couple of times, I was just winging it but I learned to research the areas I was visiting as to what would be good to do.

So to have a more soulful experience in your solo travels, here are some things you might want to check out.

1). Explore local markets, try fruit or vegetables that you've never had. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Try street food and immerse yourself in the local culture outside of the touristy areas.

2). Visit historical sites, such as templates, and museums to learn about the country's history and culture.

3). Participate in water based activities, such as surfing (with an instructor for newbies, of course), snorkeling, scuba diving or fishing to appreciate the country's coastal beauty and marine life.

4). Take a cooking class to learn how to make traditional dishes and get a taste of the local cuisine.

5). Attend a local festival or celebration to experience the country's rich cultural heritage and traditions. Sometimes, there are local plays, theatre, depending on where you're going as well. You can google them or find out where the local paper is sold to find out what's going on.

6).Hike or bike through rural areas (using safety precautions, preferably in the day time, not taking pics of anyone's home or carrying important possessions with you) to see traditional lifestyle and interact with communities.

7). Join a Cultural tour or workshop, such as dance, music or an art class to learn more about the country's customs and traditions. These kinds of activities really give a soulful experience.

8). Take a guided boat tour to see the local beauty and it's surrounding cities.

Finally, always support small local businesses, it stimulates their economy and provides sustainability for the locals. Be respectful to the local customs. Happy Travels.
